How to Fix iTunes Error 3194 iOS 4.2.1 4.3 4.3.1 4.3.2 4.3.3 4.3.4 4.3.5 Tutorial

The tutorial will show you how to fix the common iTunes error 3194 while you’re trying to upload a custom jailbroken firmware to your apple device. You can do that by temporarily blocking Apple’s firmware signing services. Error 3194 seems to be triggered when unsigned firmware is used, often during an iOS downgrade or even during some restores like restoring your apple device firmware to a custom jailbroken firmware.

This Method Support the following devices:

  • iPhone 2G
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 3GS (old & new bootrom)
  • iPhone 4
  • iPod Touch 1G
  • iPod Touch 2G (MB & MC)
  • iPod Touch 3G
  • iPod Touch 4
  • iPad
  • Apple TV 2
  • iOS 4.3.2
  • iOS 4.3.1
  • iOS 4.2.1

NOTE FOR USERS WHO WANT TO DOWNGRADE FIRMWARE: If you’re trying to downgrade your firmware from a newer version to an older version you will only be able to do so if you have saved the SHSH in cydia for your device otherwise this method will not help you and there is no way for you downgrade.

UPDATE: If you’re trying to update/restore your device to a stock iOS 4.3.3 or Custom iOS 4.3.3 and you’re getting error 3194, or if you tried this method below and it did not work for you Click Here to see this fix. We recommend that you try the method below first.

Please Follow the steps below and watch the tutorial video below:

  • Exit iTunes
  • Locate your hosts file:
    • In Mac OS X /etc/hosts
    • In Windows c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
  • Open the hosts file with Administrator privileges using Notepad.
  • Add the following lines to the very bottom of the hosts file:
  • #74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
  • Connect your device to the computer
  • Launch iTunes
  • Put device into DFU Mode by turning your device off and then holding down the sleep and power button for 10 seconds, then release the power button but hold onto the home button until iTunes tells you that the device is now in recover mode
  • Use the iTunes Restore feature as usual with the iOS device

Once your iOS update is finished, remove the “#74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” line from your hosts file again so that iTunes can properly update as usual.

    • Support Team says:

Most likely you will need a sim to activate it but i would try to jailbreak it and see if that will help.

  2. Cameron Maclean says:

It doesn’t work i still get the code. My ipod will not load up at all it is just restarting itself. I cannot run tinyumbrella because there is always a java startup error and this won’twork because i keep getting the code. WHAT AM I GOING TO DO HELP! Also in the host file there are no apple or any other files.

    • Support Team says:

What it your device model, iOS version and what is it you wanted to do to begin with? also is your device jailbroken?

  3. OogleManiac says:

I had two lines of gs.apple.com and the 74.208 line had numbers missing and different numbers in others so deleted it all and it was restored. Thank you!

Have your tried to connect your device to iTunes and put it in dfu mode then use the update button to update your device to 5.1?

      • Namaste says:

Hey. pretty experienced and have never had such a problem I couldn’t fix on my own with some research but been working on it for 20 hours straight. I have Same problem with iPhone 4. And yes, I did try DFU Mode with so many attempts and fixing this. Still get same error (3194) every time. Also,I cannot ‘Just boot tethered’ simply exploits and then comes up Recovery Mode. I was going to give up on jailbreak and just restore to factory but 3194 error is stopping me.

        • Support Team says:

what you can do is restore your device through iTunes to iOS 5.1 that iTunes downloaded not the one you download on your own, iTunes save it somewhere on your computer when you do the update to begin with

  7. Billabong says:

I just noticed iOS 4.0.1 isn’t on your tutorial listing there, so question # 1 is answered.

  8. Billabong says:

    Hi,
I have a iphone 4 iOS 4.0.1 and its jailbroken and unlocked with a baseband of 1.59.00. I’ve created a custom ipsw for iOS 5.0.1 using redsn0w to preserve the baseband. I plan on jailbreaking it again after the upgrade but for some reason I can’t get itunes to update/restore the current iOS to 5. I get the 3194 error. My question(s) first off is; 1) Would this tutorial help me resolve this problem? 2) If not, is there another way around this? I just want to make sure, I’d rather be safe then sorry. BTW: I’m using itunes 10.6 (latest one, i think) on windows xp. I’m planning on using redsn0w 0.9.910b1 to re-jailbreak untethered. Let me know if I’m missing anything else from this. I’ve done the research but there’s too many variations to trust.

    Thanks Billabong.

    • Support Team says:

It should work in your case, and everything you mentioned in your question sounds good.

      • Billabong says:

Thanks for the reply. I did some more research last night and noticed there’s a new redsn0w 0.9.910b5c which fixes some bugs. My last question(s): Would redsn0w untether the jailbreak or would I need to install Corona latest version? Aside from corona there’s no other way, correct?

        • Support Team says:

As of now the only available jailbreak for iOS 5.1 on iPhone 4 is tethered.

          • Billabong says:

Well I tried everything on this tutorial but once i open itunes, went into DFU mode, hit the “restore” button, choose my custom ipsw. I still get the 3194 error. It won’t restore, it won’t get out of DFU mode. It looks completely bricked. Is there a way to resolve this?

          • Support Team says:

You will not be able to downgrade to any iOS older than the most recent iSO which is 5.1 unless you have saved the SHSH blob for it.

    • Vikram says:

      Hi there,
can you let me know what you found out?

      • Support Team says:

You will not be able to downgrade to any iOS older than the most recent one which is 5.1 unless you have saved the SHSH blob for it.

  9. Andres says:

Hello guys) wanna ask u something. I have an iPhone 4 -04.10.01 with iOS 4.3.3 and want to upgrade to 5.0.1 or 5.1 but I’m ussing gevey on it.. so will not be a problem after to jailbrake it? I mean this gevey cart will work even if I have another iOS version? or its not a matter?? sorry but dont know what to do(

    • Support Team says:

Every Gevey SIM model supports specific iOS so before you upgrade you need to make sure that your Gevey SIM does support 5.1, and in the main time there is only tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 so we do not recommend updating just yet.

    • dina says:

i did what u said and i dont have tu on my laptop but still have the error , i tried 3 different laptops but still the same error and redsnow not working too,, help plzzz

  10. Mo'az Dabsheh says:

    Dear Support Team,

    - I have jailbroken iPhone 3GS 5.0.1 with Modem 06.15
    - and another jailbroken iPhone 3GS baseband 05.12.01

    - I tried updating the second iPhone to 5.0.1 but I got error 3194 on iTunes, I tried every solution offered on the web since 2009 and still having it, tried more than OS, Vista, XP, 7, Mac’s except Linux.

    - how to solve that ?
    - if I used the shsh blob for the first iPhone 5.0.1 to update the second iPhone running 3.1.3 would it work to stitch it ?

    • Support Team says:

You will not be able to downgrade or upgrade to any iOS older than the most updated one which is in this case 5.1 unless you have the SHSH Blob saved for the iOS to want to update to for that specific device, you cannot use the SHSH blob from a different device.
I know its not what you wanted to hear but the good news is that the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 should be coming soon, stay connected with us on Facebook to stay updated.
      thank you

hi I got the Iphone 3gs 5.0.1 and the Ipad baseband 06.15.00 already jailbroken and unlock.right now my phone (stuck and brick with apple logo)I try to restore but still stuck with apple logo, what can I do to fix this problem? thanks

    • Support Team says:

Since you have the 06.15.00 iPad baseband in order to be able to restore you need a custom firmware iOS you cannot restore to a stock iOS anymore.

  12. Ujjyal says:

I have a jailbroken Itouch 4G with IOS 4.3.5. I was not able to restore it. Whatever I do, I was getting 3194 error. but this solution worked like a charm. thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. vnsnbr says:

I finally managed to updgrade my iPhone 3GS new bootrom from 4.3.3 to 5.0.1 while preserving my 05.13.04 baseband to be able to jailbreak and unlock later on. In my many previous attempts I have faced the 16xx and 3194 error messages multiple times.

To trick to avoid these errors are: avoid having apple related entries in your computer hosts file (this avoids 16xx errors), and use a cutomed ipsw that has your 5.0.1 SHSH blobs stitched (this avoids iTunes from complaining with the 3194 error).

These are the steps I followed:

    1. Download the 3GS 5.0.1 ispw (iPhone2,1_5.0.1_9A405_Restore.ispw).
    2. Create customed ipsw preserving BB using redsn0w_win_0.9.10b6 (Extras | Custom IPSW).
3 Recover my iPhone SHSH using tinyumbrella-5.10.09. IMPORTANT: Make sure you remove any new entry this tool makes in your hosts file.
    4. Create yet another customed ipsw using redsn0w again based on the one we previously created, but this time stitching the 5.0.1 shsh you got in the previous step (Extras | SHSH Blobs | Stitch).
    5. Use iREB 5 to get iphone in DFU mode.
    6. Use iTunes to restore stitched customed ipsw. No 16XX or 3194 should occur now. When iTunes restored is finished iPhone will be not activated.
    7. Use redsn0w to jailbreak (activation is for free). Make sure you install Cydia. iPhone will still be locked.
    8. Use ultrasn0w from Cydia to unlock.
    9. Add cydia.hackulo.us to Cydia Sources and install Installous.
    10. Connect again to iTunes and restore Backup.

    Enjoy your upgraded iPhone!

    • Angelo says:

I tried this as well and it still didn’t work I need some way to turn it on, it’s stuck on the booting screen, DFU mode doesn’t work, iREB didn’t work editing/deleting hosts didn’t work… I don’t know what else to do…

      • Support Team says:

You will not be able to restore to 4.2.1 unless you have saved the SHSH blob for 4.2.1 on your device if not, then your only choice is to update your device to 5.1 using iTunes.

i hve an itouch 4th gen 4.3.1 fresh stock. and i want to upgrade this itouch into 5.01 since it has a untethered jailbreak, but i get error 3194.. i tried editing the host but still the same error. i have the latest itunes. is there anyway i cud upgrade this? im afraid apple stop using 5.01 since there is a release of 5.1 :(

    • Support Team says:

You will not be able to upgrade to any iOS older than the latest iOS available which is in this case 5.1 UNLESS you have saved the SHSH Blob for the iOS you want to upgrade or downgrade to.

      Hello,
You should not face this problem since you are trying to update to the latest firmware version, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and when connected to iTunes click on update not restore. You may also try this method in case you are still facing the same problem.

  18. Amida says:

Thanks for the post. I fixed it by installing the latest 5.1 iOS. My iPad is working fine now. Thanks a lot.

But every time i try to restore it says error 3194 so how can i fix this please i need help!

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
You will not be able to upgrade to an iOS version older than that most recent version in this case 5.1, you can only upgrade to the latest version. We do have the jailbreak available for your device on 5.1 but its only a tethered jailbreak as of now.
      Thank you

okay so heres my deal, hopefully you can help me. I have an iphone 3GS running 4.2.1 software which is jailbroken and unlocked with an ipad baseband. I want to upgrade it to the current firmware (5.0.1). So ive used snowbreeze to create a custom IPSW file that i will later use to update my iphone. But everytime i do so, an error 3194 comes up. So i tried all that host file stuff, still didnt work. I tried it again, but this time using tinyumbrella TSS server running. It either got stuck on the “preparing iphone for restore” screen, or i got error 2005. i have no idea what im supposed to do, please help me if you can :)

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
It seems that you’re doing everything right because when you’re on the 06.15.00 baseband you will only be able to restore to a customer firmware. My recommendation is to start fresh downloading a fresh copy of the latest iTunes, sn0wbreeze and creating a new customer firmware, then changing the hosts file as in the tutorial then trying the restore again.

      • Support Team says:

        Hello,
You should not have any issues since you want to update the latest firmware, keep in mind that you will lose your jailbreak though but you can always do a tethered jailbreak for 5.0.1 once you update. Here is what you need to do:
        1. Connect your iPhone to the computer.
        2. Launch iTunes and click on update (not restore)
iTunes should take care of the rest.

    Hi folks,

have a little problem with an iPhone 3GS 32GB on 4.2.1 with new bootrom.

I’ve created a custom fw ( based on 4.3.3 ) via snowbreeze including ipad bb.

Now everytime I try to update I get Error 3194. Tried everything, played with hosts file, used 3 computers nothing. Always the same.

Strange is that two weeks ago I did the same on an iPhone 3GS 8GB and there was no error code.

    Any suggestions ?

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
When you upgrade your baseband to 06.15.00 (ipad baseband) from that point on you will only be able to restore your device to custom firmwares, you will not be able to update to stock firmware anymore.

      • Tom Tucker says:

        Sure. I know this.

        • Tom Tucker says:

          Maybe you misunderstood me.

Hello, It will not work since you dont have the SHSH blob saved for 4.3.3, i would recommend that you update to 4.2.1 06.15.00 bb that should work

        • binay sangat says:

hello.i bought an i phone 4 from denmark with a telofon carrier.but i cant use my greek sim card.is version 4.3.5 and baseband 4.10.01.how can i unlock it?except gevey card.

  29. Moffat Mugwe says:

I currently have an iPhone4 on baseband 3.10.01 and ios 4.2.1. I’m trying to update to iOS 5 with preserved baseband, but I continuously get error 3194. I’ve played around with the host file, am I stuck on iOs 4.2.1 ? have used multiple computers as well

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
Which software are you using to preserve the baseband?

      • Moffat Mugwe says:

I’ve used the latest redsn0w on a friends macbook, as well as sn0wbreeze on three of my own PCs. i’ve read around and various sources are telling me that apple has stopped signing 5.0 would this mean im stuck on 4.2.1 forever?

        • Support Team says:

          Hello,
Well you can still update to the latest 5.0.1 then do a tethered jailbreak on it

          • Moffat Mugwe says:

how would i do so? I need to use gevey for unlock. and im not too concerned with jailbreak but if I need it for 5.0.1 i will do it. how would i go about doing so?

        • Support Team says:

          Hello,
As of now the Gevey Sim does no support 5.0.1, so i would recommend that you wait a little bit until it does then you can update your device through iTunes

          • Moffat Mugwe says:

Yes, im aware Gevey doesn’t support 5.0.1 and if I upgrade through iTunes i will lose the baseband i need so the Gevey will work. I was wondering if it is impossible to recover with a preserved baseband 5.0 ipsw

  30. ahmed tar says:

hey everyone, i have a problem with updating to ios 5 from 4.3.3… i was on a custom 5.0ipsw with preserved baseband and i downgraded to 4.3.3… i want to update back to ios 5 with my preserved baseband 04.10.01, but every time i try to i get the itunes error 3194!!
i cant figure out what to do! i dont think i saved my shsh blobs when i was on 5.0
    is apple still signing 5.0?
and also do you guys think it could be the host file?
i tried a number of times to change it… does it require a full computer restart when you change it?
if somone could provide me with a tutorial on how to do it, i would greatly appreciate it,…
i tried updating exactly the way i did it back when ios 5 first came out, and now its not working :(

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
If you have not saved the shsh blob then there is now way to do it you can only update it through iTunes.

Hi team, i have an iphone 4 which was running on 4.3.4. i was trying to upgrade the version but got the error 3194. I edited the host file, did all sorts of things i came to know from google, used all tools everything. But the error still seems to be popping up. Tried it on a different PC, different version, different USB cable, 4.3.5 version, ios 5.. i am unable to get rid of the 3194 error. I am fed up now. I just need my phone to be back to normal like it was on 4.3.4. DOesnt seem to be happening. pleeeaaaseeeeeee help!

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
Here is what the problem is you will not be able to upgrade your iOS to 4.3.5 because the new IOS 5 is out and thats why you’re getting 3194 here is what you should do:
      1.Connect your iPhone to iTunes.
2.Click on Update and let iTunes update your device to the latest version iOS 5 and then if you want to jailbreak we do have the tethered jailbreak for iOS 5

  32. Jeff Ting says:

    Hi,
I have the Iphone 4 and I’m trying to restore from 4.2.1 (8C148) to 4.3.3
I tried both your instructions on hosts and tinyumbrella but still gets error 3194 and 2005. I have baseband 03.10.01
What is the solution for this? Can I still restore it to 4.3.3? Thanks!

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
You will only be able to restore to 4.3.3 if you have saved the SHSH blob, otherwise you will not be able to.

  33. john legend says:

As already posted by another user , if editing host file does not work for you — simply remove host file , put your device in DFU mode and restore. Then put the host file back …. This worked first time for me on my iPhone 4 on a tethered jailbreak ….

  34. aiman syed says:

HELLO ADMIN I HAVE BEEN TRYING FOR WEEKS TO DOWNGRADE MY NEWLY BOUGHT IPAD WIFI FROM US WHICH IS ALREADY 4.3.5 BUT I STILL GET ERROR 3194 ANY IDEAS I HAVE SEARCHED AND SEARCHED

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
You will not be able to downgrade becasue you have not saved the shsh blob for it before since you bough it already at 4.3.5, is your iPad 1 or ipad 2 and why do you want to downgrade?

  35. JJJMASO says:

Ok, I have a 3G 3.1.3 Jailbroken iphone / 6.15.00 BB, that was working perfect, that is until I accidently hit update in itunes to 4.2 FW. Well, it bricked my phone. I am now stuck in DFU/Recovery mode. I have looked in Tiny Umbrella and have shsh blobs for 4.1/4.2.1 , and i have tried everything. I keep getting 2/3 way on restore and it stalls. Ive tried:

    3.1.2 restore
    3.1.3 restore
    4.1 restore
    4.2.1 restore
    3.1.3 sn0wbreeze jailbroken restore
    4.2.1 sn0wbreeze jailbroken restore

all stall. Ive ran tiny umbrella while restoring, nothing works. I usually get error 9 after i finally give up and reboot phone, or sometimes ive gotton error 6/37 and when i use tiny umbrella i get error 14

Suggestions on the correct way to get my phone back up to either 3.1.3 or any version would help.

    Thanks

    John

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
Since your baseband is 06.15.00 this means that you will not be able to restore your iPhone to a stock firmware, but what you can do is to create a custom firmware using the jailbreak software and then restore to that one.

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
This is how the original hosts file look like:
      # Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
      #
      # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
      #
      # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
      # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
      # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
      # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
      # space.
      #
      # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
      # lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.
      #
      # For example:
      #
      # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
      # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

      # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
      # 127.0.0.1 localhost
      # ::1 localhost

now m trying to restore with ios 4.1,4.2.1,4.3.2,4.3.5 (direct update)
m still getting error 3194 on itunes
    m stuck badly :@

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
If you want to restore to 4.3.5, you should not get any errors since it is the latest firmware here what you need to do, Connect your ipod to itunes and click on update and let itunes do the update on its own.

  44. Ronn says:

you know what wrong in this tutorial, is that they telling us to add the #74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com to our hosts file, but supposed to be it dont have to the “#” sign in front (74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com). And then it work on me.. my point is why you have to put “#” sign in your tut and not telling that you need to remove that.. but anyway.. thanks

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
Thank you for the input, we tried it both ways and it seems that it works in some cases with the # sign and it works in other cases without #.
