How to Fix iTunes Error 3194 when update to iOS 4.3.3

Some iPhone users who have changed their system’s host file to point to Cydia’s SHSH caching server, are not able to restore or update their iPhone to iOS 4.3.3 through iTunes they are getting the following message “The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3194).”

This problem is due to a bug in Cydia’s back end which should be fixed soon. In the main time if you want to fix iTunes error 3194 and be able to upgrade your device to the stock iOS 4.3.3 or a custom iOS 4.3.3, then please follow the steps below.

NOTE: If you know for a fact that you did not change your system host file to point to Cydia’s SHSH cashing server before, or if you already tried this method below and you are still getting 3194 error Click Here to see another method to fix error 3194.

  1. Download TinyUmbrella for windows or TinyUmbrella for mac.
  2. Launch TinyUmbrella and select “Advanced” then uncheck “Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit” option.
  3. Click on “Start TSS Server”.
  4. Now you should see Green Check Mark + “TinyUmbrella’s TSS server is running” .
  5. Now Connect your iDevice to the computer and launch iTunes while keeping Tiny Umbrella Running.
  6. Hold the Shift Key and Click on Restore in iTunes and browse for the IPSW file, Now you should not face the 3194 error.

Hello, I’ve been having a fun time trying to install 5.0.1 on my iPhone 4, (its currently on 4.1 lol) I created the custom ipsw in Snowbreeze and attempted to install, it would extract the file and give me error (3194) for reasons i understand now. So i downloaded Tinyumbrella and that fixed that error, and now extracts the file but gets stuck at (preparing the phone for install) and gives me error (1604)

Any help would be appreciated, thank you

You will not be able to upgrade to anything older than 5.1.1 i recommend creating a custom firmware using 5.1.1 instead.

  6. Eyom says:

    Hi,
I have an iphone 3gs running on IOS 4.1. Is there a way for me to update to IOS 5.0? I already made a custom IPSW 5.0 to preserve my baseband. I followed your guide to restore. At first I encountered error 3194. Then I activated tinyumbrella. 3194 was gone and I was happy. After that iTunes gave me an error 2005. I could not get past this error. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    • Support Team says:

You should create a custom firmware using 5.1 while preserving the baseband

      • eyom says:

So that means that i have no choice but to update to 5.1?

        • Support Team says:

unless you have saved the SHSH blob…

          • Eyom says:

Aww. Sorry for asking so many things but I was just wondering if is it possible for me to use other’s shsh blobs? I mean, if i haven’t saved my shsh blob for 5.0.1, can i download shsh blobs on the internet and use it for me to update to 5.0.1?

          • Support Team says:

No worries. the SHSH Blob is unique for your each device so there is no way around it if you have not saved it.

  7. frank says:

o and also where can i find this so called IPSW file?

    • Support Team says:

The IPSW file is the format that iTunes use to update and restore your device its the iOS like 5.1 5.0.1,… usually its saved somewhere in your computer like:

      C:\Users\Your Account Name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

      or

      %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

  8. frank says:

    what is the IPSW file?

I have even tried removing iTunes completly and reinstalling it proper to the newest version, but still no happyness. Could you please help me, maybe tell me something i am doing wrong?

    • Bland says:

I read further down, one of your comments, i Removed iTunes completely, (Using Revo Uninstaller) and then reinstalled it, IT seems to be working, although it is still saying “Preparing iPhone for Restore” After about a 2 minutes, but i think it’s my fault, as i installed iTunes from the icon on my desktop, which may have been an old one. I’ll follow instructions you gave Duli.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH (so far :p ) :D

  12. Duli says:

I’ve gone to the point where you have to search for IPSW file, everything was fine but now iTunes says “Preparing iPod for restoring” and it has been like this for about 30minutes, I can’t unplug my device because it shows the icon that iPod need to be connected to PC and that the iTunes should be turned on (http://widgetinlife.com/uploadfiles/widgetinlifecom-1298686650/how-to-fix-white-cydia-icon-after-jailbreak_2.png). I can’t stop it and I can’t turn iTunes off.

I have a white ipod touch 4g on a tethered jailbreak from RedSn0w for version 5.1.1 I am trying to restore it to factory setting, and at this point i do not care what firmware to use. I no longer want it to be jailbroken because the Screen is cracked and the touch screen is inresponsive(other wise i would of just did the complete restore in the setting app) I dont know why(other then maybe forgetting to save the SHSH blobs before jailbreaking it} but itunes refuses to restore no mater what firmware i have tried, both by just clicking restore and the shift+restore… I have tried so many things to try and get my ipod to work, im pretty sure if not, Almost all.. Ive tried the host trick where you delete the last line putting it into pawned dfu mode and normal dfu mode Ive used Tiny Umbrella(Dont know if saving shsh before the or after the jailbreak makes a difference but i did it after) and iReb Even with iReb I still get the 1600 errors… Ive read a little about iFaith, but im not quite sure what that is, and if this is what i need can someone explain it to me…. Btw im on a pc, thats all i have, no mac IF ANYONE KNOWS ANYWAY TO RESTORE MY IPOD SUCCESSFULLY IT WILL BE GREATLY(no really, GREATLY!!!!!!!}Apreciated… i am about to tear my hair out ive never had this problem to the point i could not fix it myself so this is honestly a desprate cry for help by making an account just to ask lol

        OR am i just Screwed……..

        • Support Team says:

Put your device in dfu mode and connect it iTunes and click update if the update is not available then restore and browse for the file that was saved by iTunes at the time of the first update (not the one you downloaded manually) iTunes will save it somewhere on your computers try:
          ~username/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Update

Before that, i got 3194; i passed it by editing host file (adding 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com). Whenever i put my idevice to Recovery mode (iTune logo), error 1904 appear. Whenever my phone is in DFU mode, 1600 appear. But when i pwned it to DFU (using redsnow, iReb), 1602 or 1601 appear. I alr tried many solution from other blog (such as using iReb, uninstall and reinstall latest iTunes, change USB port and kill itunes during “prepare iphone for restore”), still not work. HELP!!!

      Hello,
You will not be able to restore to 4.3.3 or 5.0.1 unless you have already saved the SHSH blob for the firmware you want to restore to, if you have not, your only option is to update your device to 5.1.

Initially have 3194 error, solved using Tiny Umbrella. If Ipad in Recovery Mode I will get Error 1604, if IPAD in DFU mode I will get Error 2005. Do you mean, now that Apple have Ver 5.1 on its update server, we will not be able to do Shift+Restore to any IPSW other than the new 5.1?

    Hi,
I’m experiencing a great deal of problems when trying to downgrade from iOS 4.3.5 to 4.3.3 on my iPhone 4. When following the tutorial , I keep getting a 3194 error. When I then follow the instructions in this tutorial, I get a 2005 error.

When I realized these errors might be caused by my updated iTunes version, I uninstalled everything and installed iTunes 10.4.1. I’m now getting error 1600, for which I installed iREB v4. After making it quite a bit through the restoration process, I got error 1013.

Even after creating a custom IPSW with sn0wbreeze and running iREB I keep getting the 3194 error (which I’m guessing is because I don’t activate the tinyumbrella server. I don’t have SHSH files though… Is there anything I can do at this point to downgrade? My iPhone seems pretty dead at the moment, considering that it doesn’t even ask me to connect to iTunes anymore (the screen is just black). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello,

I really appreciate all the help you guys are giving us. I have an iPhone 3gs with iPad baseband and 4.3.3 running on it. I’m trying to restore the iPhone so I can give it to someone. I’m definitely running into the same issue as most others with the fail restore error 3194. I did the new instructions using Tiny Umbrella but now the iPhone seems stuck in iTunes saying “Preparing iPhone for restore”. Nothing is happening at all. On my iPhone it’s showing the plug into iTunes screen.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

      Hello,
Since your iPhone is running under the iPad 06.15.00 baseband you will not be able to restore to a stock firmware does not matter what you do. But what you can do is search for a custom firmware and you should be able to restore this way.

        Hello,

Thank you for replying back. I’ve already downloaded a couple of custom firmwares and it’s still not allowing me to restore it. I’m stuck in dfu mode (black screen) and when I try to do the restore it shows me 3194 error code. But the big problem is being stuck in dfu mode.

Any help would be greatly appreciated admin.

        Thanks,

        Khalid

got error 34 after fixing the error 3194, any help?

    • Support Team says:

      1) BACK UP YOUR BACK UP DIRECTORY in Library/Application Support/MobileSync
      2) When the restore process once again complains of -34, select the middle choice (which is not cancel and is not retry, something like delete backup)
      3) Now “restore” in the iphone info page
      4) Make sure that the downsampling is again enabled
      5) Sync

Upgrading jailbroken ipad 1 4.2.1 to 4.3.5. Host file fixed – that didn’t work.

TinyUmbrella’s log says it saved the SHSH for 4.3.5. I tried the steps above and I still get the 3194 error.

    Please help.

    • Support Team says:

      Hello,
4.3.5 is the latest firmware, and you should not get any errors trying to update your device to it.
      1. Connect your iPad to iTunes.
      2. Click on Update (not restore)
iTunes should download and update your device automatically.
make sure that you remove the host fix and leave it as it was before.

could you help me how to solved this error??

The instructions, as posted by Carlos Leopoldo are as follows:

Steps to fixing 1604 iPhone restore error:

      1. There is no need to reinstall iTunes or whatever. Keep the same version that you have used to restore or backup previously.

      2. Make sure that iPhone is disconnected from your computer and that iTunes is closed.

      3. The following step of fixing 1604 iPhone restore error is Windows XP specific, if you are a Mac user, you may have to locate the folders yourselves as I am not sure: Go to folder C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates. You will see one or more files. Cut and paste them somewhere else. Do not delete them in case the steps does not work for you, you can still copy them back to the folder. You can find out your username by doing a Ctrl-Alt-Del. If somehow you cannot find the folder, you are probably in the wrong user directory.

      4. Launch iTunes and put your iPhone in recovery mode. Refer to this article on Unable To Restore iPhone on how to do put iPhone in recovery mode.

      5. Proceed with restore and iTunes will download the update online. If you are downgrading to a lower version, do step 3 and leaving only the firmware file that you want to downgrade to. Double click on the file and iTunes will begin the restore.
