In some countries there is certain laws and restrictions that does not allow Apple to sell iPhone and lock it to local cell phone service providers. These laws made Apple come out with an iPhone that known in the market as Factory Unlocked iPhone, or Officially Unlocked iPhone, which is not 100% true, because this iPhone is never been locked, it was manufactured by Apple without any SIM card restrictions so you can use it with any GSM SIM card worldwide.
One of the great things about this Factory Unlocked iPhone is that it does not matter how many times you update, upgrade or downgrade your firmware, it will still work with any SIM card worldwide, also you can still jailbreak this iPhone and you don’t have to worry about effecting the unlocking status of your factory unlocked iPhone. But besides the fact that this iPhone is NOT locked to any specific service provider, and you can use it worldwide without having to unlock it, it is exactly like the locked iPhone.

Good morning, I have a AT&T locked iPhone 4 that was recently unlocked (factory unlocked) already updated from ios 5.1 to 5.1.1. And still unlocked. My question is, can I jailbreak it without any malfuncction or problem….? Thanks in advance.

best way to find out is to put a SIM card in it and see if it will pick up the signal.

If your iPhone is factory unlocked then that means that you can upgrade to 5.1.1 and you will not lose your unlock status.

i would like to know whether the CDMA version of the iphone comes by default unlocked. And one more thing,, does (out of the box) 4S actually supports CDMA/GSM Sims without any problems.
CDMA iPhone do not come factory unlocked, only GSM iPhones are offers as factory unlocked by Apple. As for the new 4S it all depends on the service provide for example the AT&T iPhone 4S only supports GSM, but the Verizon iPhone 4S supports CDMA and it can support GSM if you get it unlocked by Verizon.
