In some countries there is certain laws and restrictions that does not allow Apple to sell iPhone and lock it to local cell phone service providers. These laws made Apple come out with an iPhone that known in the market as Factory Unlocked iPhone, or Officially Unlocked iPhone, which is not 100% true, because this iPhone is never been locked, it was manufactured by Apple without any SIM card restrictions so you can use it with any GSM SIM card worldwide.
One of the great things about this Factory Unlocked iPhone is that it does not matter how many times you update, upgrade or downgrade your firmware, it will still work with any SIM card worldwide, also you can still jailbreak this iPhone and you don’t have to worry about effecting the unlocking status of your factory unlocked iPhone. But besides the fact that this iPhone is NOT locked to any specific service provider, and you can use it worldwide without having to unlock it, it is exactly like the locked iPhone.
Factory Unlocked iPhone is better than a locked iPhone because of two reasons, one its already unlocked so you don’t have to worry about unlocking to use any sim card you like, and two you can upgrade your firmware version every time apple have a new version and your iphone will stay unlocked.

I have a big problem with my iPhone 4 (8GB). I got it from Switzerland, but I’m using it with a UK sim. What I thought it was FACTORY UNLOCKED, since it immediately found my carrier even before activating the phone. But I couldn’t activate it it kept saying that “The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported” blabla….
So I decided to give it a try and jailbreake it with the latest redsn0w (hacktivate). I jailbroke it, everything went flawless, I could use it without any problem. Before the battery depleted the only program I tried to install from Cydia was “iphonedelivery” (don’t know if that matters anything).
Anyway, the battery depleted, then I charged it, turned it on and ever since it says “no service”. What can I do now? I have restored it from iTunes, Jailbroke it again with redsn0w, with no luck. If I restore with iTunes, there is “no service”, and it should still be activated (with a proper sim), or if I jailbreake it with redsn0w, it is working fine but I cannot use it as a phone , since still “no service”. What am I doing wrong?
What can I do now? Any any any ideas are really appreciated.

If your iPhone is factory unlocked then you should have service regardless if you have restore it, jailbreak it or update the iOS version. Do you know what was your iOS version and baseband when the iPhone was working with the UK sim?

Jailbreaking a device will give you ability to customize however you want to and will enable you install free apps, but it will not unlock it which means giving it the ability to be used with any SIM card worldwide for example Tmobile. You did jailbreak your device if you have cydia.

Jailbreaking your device and installing cydia will not effect your unlock status.

If you are not using Gevey SIM card and your iPhone is unlocked then most likely its factory unlocked because there is no software unlock for your version yet.

Updating or restoring your device will not effect your unlock status, but it will remove your jailbreak it which you can always rejailbreak again.

The only way to find out is to insert a sim and try it.
@shiv you can check your phone status i.e. whether its factory unlocked or not by calling apple service centre. you have to just give your phone’s imei number. to check your imei no. connect your iphone access it using itunes or just open this link for further help http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1267.

Ok, i already know that if i have an factory unlocked iphone i can upgrade the firmware and then jailbreak it and it will still be unlocked…but i dont know what is a “factory” unlocked iphone, so i dont know if mine is on that “factory” status. anyways, my question is: if my iphone is unlocked with turbo sim(i dont know if it is factoy unlock or not), can i still update it to 5.1.1 and then jailbreak it and it will still be unlocked?…thank you a lot!
Factory unlocked iPhone means that Apple have white listed the IMEI for the iPhone so you can use it with any SIM card worldwide. IF you are using Gevey SIM most likely your iPhone is not factory unlocked. And keep in mind there is a different gevey sim for the new 5.1.1 so if you update your current sim might not work.

You will need a sim card to know for sure, but it is possible that its factory unlocked because att do offer this service now.

Thats mean its not locked to a specific carrier in most cases it means that your iPhone in unlocked.

No need to take it to ATT you can just call them or chat with them on their website they will only ask you for one thing which is you IMEI number (they will not find out that your iPhone is jailbroken).

He says it was with At&T and currently in the process of being unlocked (by At&T), what I would like to know is, can I stick any sim cards in it while I’m in the US? I’m looking at a straightalk sim at the moment, but I’m unsure whether this will give me a new number or not, since he’ll be keeping his.

Yes if the iPhone gets unlocked by ATT then it will be considered Factory unlocked and you can use it with any sim card.

BIG PROBLEMO!!! i have a iphone 3g unlocked no sim card . i have it with simple mobile i was on itunes and it gives me an option to update the software to ios .. i did and now it has gone to factory or firmware settings like if its brand new ,, its asking me about the sim card and that it isnt installed , obviously its a unlocked iphone,. it doesnt give me anymore options whatsoever , i think i messed it up big timeeeel. ;/

I got told on purchase that i could use it in NZ with any sim card as that is where i am living now yet when i insert SIM card into cell process for activating the iphone its show the below message..((the sim card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported.

As of now there is no unlock solution for iPhone 4S so the only way you will be able to use it with another SIM card is for the iPhone to be factory unlocked. So i would call your service provider and ask them if their sim card is compatible with iPhone, if so then your iPhone is not factory unlocked and you need to wait until a new unlock is released. The jailbreak will not help.
