iPhone Tips & Tricks #127: Use The Built-In Dictionary

Although there are many apps on the Apple App Store that can be used as dictionaries, it is really impractical to have to close an application and then jump into the dictionary app just to get the definition of one word.  This is something that Apple has anticipated quite well and they have a built-in dictionary that you can access anywhere within the iPhone.

Basically, for example, if you are in Safari and you stumble upon a word that you are not familiar with, you can just highlight that word and then tap and hold on the highlighted section.  Then a pop-up will appear with a set of options, one of them that is labelled “Define”.  Tap on that option and you will get a definition of the word that you highlighted, provided of course that it is an actual word included in the iPhone dictionary database.

This is a tip that can be used on all iPhones on all iOS firmware versions.
