iPhone Tips & Tricks #228: How To Make Text Messages Private

The one thing that was really annoying with the notification system before iOS5 was that pop-ups would appear with the message that was received for all the world to see.  Of course, even with the banners implementation, it is still easy to see the message that is received just by dragging down theNotificationCenteras it is there in full view.  You can ensure privacy by doing the following.

To make sure that the whole message that you receive is not displayed for everyone to read, just go to Settings, tap on Messages and you will see in the preferences panel of that section an option that says Show Preview.  Switch that to off and whenever you get a message, it will just say that you received a message and not show the actual message itself.

This works on all iPhone models running on any version of iOS firmware.
