iPhone Tips & Tricks #272: How To Do An Over The Air Update
Even with the over the air (OTA) feature now on iOS, it is little surprise that people are still used to tethering their devices for an update through their computers using the cable supplied with the iPhone. It’s just a force of habit. But if you truly want to get a wireless update, you can do that easily.

To get your OTA update whenever there is something new from Apple, just launch the Settings application and tap on the General preferences tab. Then tap on Software Update. If there is an update, you will get a pop-up that says so. Tap Download & install and then watch the progress bar as it downloads. Once it is downloaded, you will be instructed to restart your device after it installs. It will install for you if you do not respond to this prompt and Apple will verify the install.
This works on all iPhones running iOS5 and above.
